ALL AMERICAN TRAIL

With much fanfare Fort Bragg and the Regional Land Use Advisory Commission (RLUAC) opened the first phase of the All American Trail to the public on April 21st.

With much fanfare Fort Bragg and the Regional Land Use Advisory Commission (RLUAC) opened the first phase of the All American Trail to the public on April 21st.  The event was attended by nearly 300 dignitaries and Fort Bragg school children.   Since then a second leg of the trail has been completed, bringing its overall length to approximately eleven miles.  The trail is an educational and scenic recreational pathway for hikers, runners, and bicyclers.  It follows Fort Bragg's southern boundary in Hoke County and can be accessed from Hobson Road, the Vass-Raeford Road, and State Highway 211.

"Our vision is for the trail to become a destination pathway that attracts military and civilain users from throughout the country, " Mike Lynch said. Lynch is Fort Bragg's Director of Plans and Mobilization and co-chair of the All-American Trail Committee. "There are more than 1500 species of plants and trees, and over 400 species of wildlife--including the endangered Red Cockaded Woodpecker."

Signage along the trail has been provided that identifies and describes the unique plants and wildlife. The terrain is mixed with sections that range from nearly flat to fairly hilly and includes longleaf pine forest and meadows.

The idea for the trail grew out of a recommendation contained in the Joint Land Use Study published in May 2003 by the Fort Bragg / Pope Air Force Base Regional Land Use Advisory Commission.  The All American Trail will eventually circumnavigate the entire boundary of Fort Bragg (approximately 70 miles in length) and extend through Cumberland, Hoke, Moore, and Harnett Counties.
