ACROSS THE SANDHILLS | SUMMER 2007

Across the Sandhills is the quarterly newsletter of Sustainable Sandhills. Our goal is to recognize and promote sustainable action by local organizations, volunteer groups and citizens of the Sandhills Region

Southern Pines Greenway

The Southern Pines Greenway system provides benefits to all citizens of Southern Pines and is used heavily by Southern Pines residents and non-residents. Local High Schools use the greenway systems for their cross country teams; bike groups have used it for races; people who like to exercise daily or several times a week; people walking their dogs or just strolling around with friends & family.

In 1990 the Town of Southern Pines adopted a master plan that included a greenway system. The master plan was revised in 1996. Currently, there are 11 miles of greenway with future growth mapped out. The Town Council adopted the master plan and have funded the greenway's expansion, while some of the greenway system was developed when communities were built in Southern Pines (such as Forest Creek).

The Southern Pines Recreation & Parks Department is leading the way in the Sandhills area with its greenway trail system. Pedestrian and bicycle use are allowed.

Reservoir Park Greenway

Approximately two miles long, the trail wanders the scenic 95 acre lake and features the "Beaver Dam Walkway" and two scenic overlook.

Longleaf Greenway

Approximately one mile in length, this greenway connects the Pine Grove Village, Talamore, and Longleaf neighborhoods to the Reservoir Park and Forest Creek Greenway's.

Forest Creek Greenway

When complete, this trail will connect Longleaf Greenway to the Forest Creek Development, to the O'Neal School, and to Highway 22 at Nicks Creek. This greenway trail is over four miles long.

Mill Creek Greenway

This one mile section of trail connects Reservoir Park to the Warrior Woods residential area. Future plans add another three miles of trail through Warrior Woods and to the Carolina golf community.

Nick's Creek Greenway
