E-waste recycling programNow that you have received all those great new electronics as gifts, what are you going to do with the old ones? |
RECYCLE THEM!
Items normally considered ewaste are:
- Laptops and desktop computers
- Monitors
- Hard drives
- USB cables
- Mice
- Keyboards
- Printers
- Scanners
- Fax machines
- Circuit boards
- Televisions
- Speakers
- Calculators
- CDs/DVDs
- Video game systems
- Video games
- Telephones and mobile phones, etc.
Additionally, there are many recyclable materials within those electronics, most commonly: metal, plastic and glass.
Electronics also contain materials toxic to both humans and animals, such as: arsenic, beryllium cadmium, copper, lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium and brominated flame retardants.
By recycling your old electronics, you divert them from our landfills, support the reuse and recycling of valuable materials, and prevent the release of embedded hazardous materials into our air and water supply.
There are several locations across our region where residents can recycle ewaste, more commonly referred to as "ecycling."
Cumberland County:
All 17 of the county's container sites and the Recycling Center at the Ann Street landfill. To find the nearest Cumberland County (CC) container site, along with hours of operation, check the CC Solid Waste Management website or call 910.321.6830.
Lee County:
All 5 of the county's container sites and the Lee County C&D landfill accept electronic items. Container sites are for use by rural county residents only (no fee for ecycling). Municipal residents can drop off ewaste at the landfill for a small fee. To find the nearest Lee County container site, along with hours of operation, check the Lee County Solid Waste website or call 919.718.4622.
Fort Bragg:
The Directorate of Public Works (DPW) is offering an ewaste Recycling Program through March 2008. Note: Government-issued items will not be accepted. Ewaste can be dropped off at the North and South Post PX parking lots. If you visit Ft. Bragg on a regular basis, you can also deliver these items year-round to the DPW Recycling Center, Building 31137, Monday through Friday between 0730 and 1600. For more information, call 910.432.8467 or 910.396.5323.
