Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010 | Sustainable Film Series

Thank you for joining us at the screening of Thirst, a film that discusses whether water is a human right for all people or a commodity to be bought and sold in the global marketplace.  This thought-provoking film led to a healthy discussion about the need for safe drinking water throughout the world and what happens when we don't sustain this very necessary commodity.

Tuesday, August 17, 2010 | Team Meeting

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our August Team Meeting.  This meeting provided information about Low Impact Development and ended with attendees providing feedback on why LID is important to Moore County.  Interest was also sparked for a possible an LID workshop to be held sometime later this fall!!

Thank you to everyone to attended our free screening of Dirt! The Movie.  The film provided a lot of information and inspiration about the importance of keeping dirt healthy!

The first step to healthy dirt is to have your soil tested.  NC Cooperative Extension offers FREE soil testing.  They will also help you interpret your soil report and advise you on the next steps to take.  Contact the Moore County Cooperative Extension at 910-947-3188, visit them at 707 Pinehurst Avenue in Carthage, or check out their website at http://moore.ces.ncsu.edu/.

If you are interested in learning more about the film (or about dirt in general), please visit the Dirt! The Movie website at www.dirtthemovie.org.

Tuesday, April 20, 2010 | Team Meeting

Thank you to everyone who attended our April Community Action Team Meeting.  Special thanks to our guest speaker Tom Blue from Sustainable Fort Bragg.

Tom provided us with a comprehensive overview of water resources in the Sandhills, including explanations of basic hydrology, storm water management, wastewater collection and treatment, water supply, and water treatment and distribution.  Tom ended his presentation by highlighting the lack of laws and regulations regarding water resources.  If you weren’t able to attend, you can view Tom’s presentation by clicking on the link below.

Tom provided us with these important steps that folks can take to conserve and protect water resources in our area:

1) Let the rainfall soak into your yard instead of putting it into a ditch or pipe to run off your property. This can easily be done by "scooping out some dirt" to make small smooth depressions a few inches deep (3 to 12 inches usually) here and there where the water can soak into the ground within a few hours after the rain stops. This won't harm the plants and actually reduces the needed for irrigation. Most of the Sandhills has very high natural capacity to soak in a lot of rainwater. The NC Cooperative Extension Service would love to help folks with this. Extension service agents often have advanced training, graduate education, and can tap directly into the university professors at NCSU and NCATSU - all completely free! The first point of contact is the Moore County office: 947-3188.

2) Use native vegetation and appropriate non-native vegetation in your yard. The Southern Pines Garden Club has a small, easy-to-read guide on landscaping in the Sandhills. It is available from the Country Book Store on Broad Street in Southern Pines (and is fairly inexpensive). The Fort Bragg Garden Club also has a list of preferred landscape plants for easy selection of species.  As with #1 above, we encourage folks to have cooperative extension agents come out to help them with landscaping decisions!

3) Water saving fixtures in the home save lots of water. This is the #1 way we save water at Fort Bragg facilities and it makes a huge difference. Water conserving WaterSense labeled products are available from most plumbing and home supply stores.

4) An easy way to save water is turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth. Most folks leave it going the whole time. Just turn it on when you need it. After reminding yourself to do this for a few weeks, it becomes habit.

The first Moore County CAT meeting of 2010 was held at the Dempsey Student Center of Sandhills Community College.  Attendees were reminded of the upcoming Palustris Festival and updated on Sustainable Sandhills’ ongoing Cultural Resources Inventory.

The majority of the meeting involved discussion of the upcoming Urban Farm Tour to be held on April 10th.  This year’s Tour promises to be very successful, with a number of sites already confirmed.  Meeting attendees formed break-out groups to discuss potential fundraisers and sponsors, a pre-event potluck for participants and volunteers, and media and outreach for the event.  Attendees were also given the chance to sign up to volunteer the day of the event.

If you are interested in volunteering, becoming an event sponsor, or being a site on the Tour, please contact Heather Brown (brownh@ctc.com, 910-484-9098).

Thursday, January 29, 2009 | Team Meeting

Please take some time to review the meeting presentation if you were unable to join us, and contact Heather with any questions you may have. Updates were given on projects presented at our last meeting, including the upcoming Urban Farm Tour and the Sandhills Community College Green Summit.  We also watched and discussed "The Cycle," a video which explains single stream recycling and what happens to recyclables once they’re put by the curb.  This was followed by an introduction to our new Film Series, beginning February 17 with Asparagus!  Stalking the American Life.  Several ideas for CAT projects were discussed, including a community compost program, a packaging material recycling program, and a green building symposium.  Several team members stated they would be contacting us in the near future to see how we can move these ideas forward as a team.   The desire to help reduce waste by sharing unwanted, slightly- used items with someone who needs them or wants them was discussed extensively, which led to the idea of creating a webpage for residents in our community to exchange information about these items.  Team member Heidi Scribner did some research after our CAT meeting and found this website for Freecycle, “a grassroots, nonprofit movement" working in Moore and Lee Counties.  It’s free, so give it a try!   Thank you, Heidi, for finding this great resource.

Thursday, November 13, 2008 | Team Meeting

Recycling was an issue that was discussed at the September meeting and we were able to develop one document which contains a list of all of the recycling facilities in Moore County along with their address, hours of operation, phone number, holiday schedule and most importantly, what materials they accept. To see this document, click on the “State of Recycling in Moore County.”  We continue to update this document as more information becomes available to us.

Sustainable Sandhills staff members also gave an update on the projects presented at the kickoff meeting and allowed attendees to volunteer for projects they were interested in.  Two new community projects were highlighted – Sandhills Community College Green Committee and Green Flyer Club, and the Spring 2009 Urban Farm Tour.
