February, 2011 | Master Gardener Program
The Extension Master Gardeners Program is an educational program designed to enhance public education in consumer horticulture. It provides educational assistance to the citizens of the county concerning lawns, fruits, vegetables, trees and ornamentals through the utilization of a trained and supervised staff. If you are interested in becoming a Master Gardener plan to attend the Master Gardeners training beginning February 3, 2011 and continuing through May 5, 2011. Classes meet each Thursday. The registration fee of $100.00 includes an intensive learning manual, Master Gardener ID badge and state dues. Participants in the program must complete the training program, pass an examination, and volunteer a minimum or 40 hours the first year (20 hours in subsequent years) at the Hoke County Cooperative Extension Center. The registration deadline is January 6, 2011 and is limited to the first 25 that pay the registration fee. Stop by our center today to register. You don't want to miss out on this great opportunity.

Active Hoke CAT Projects:
Conservation Assistance Project:
We have partnered with Hoke County Senior Services to identify homes for our energy and water conservation assistance project. This project involves making simple changes to local homes - installation of compact fluorescent lightbulbs, low-flow faucets and shower heads, and HVAC filters - that lower monthly utility bills while conserving natural resources. Lumbee River EMC has graciously donated materials to help us in this effort.
To date, we have provided this service to more than 25 homes in Hoke County. Sustainable Sandhills will continue this effort until all the homes on our list have been retrofitted to be more energy and water efficient.
We are currently seeking volunteers to help us continue this effort! If you are interested in being a volunteer, please contact Brenda Johnson at 910-484-9098 or brendaj@sustainablesandhills.org.

Sustainable Sandhills staff met with several key leaders of both Hoke County and Raeford earlier this year to gather their input on what we could do to make your community a better place. From that meeting, we have begun work in several of our program areas. Click Here to view the postcard for our meeting
